My grand tour
One of the most memorable holidays I have spent was my last trip to Italy. It is a great country for anyone who wants to visit more than one location, as the road network is excellent. Touring holidays in Italy have long been a popular choice for tourists from countries like Holland and Germany, as they can bring as much luggage as they like and reach their chosen destination in less than a day’s journey. For us, coming from England, flying is often the best way to reach this beautiful country. We flew to Venice on a low cost flight, and travelled by minibus to Corvara in the Dolomites for a six night walking holiday. What a beautiful area this is – and very popular with walkers. That popularity is maybe the only drawback, as the paths are often as crowded as the local high street. But the beautiful views are ample compensation for the lack of seclusion. The alpine huts, known as refuges, are fantastic places to rest and have a drink in idyllic surroundings. Back in the resort, the food served is better than in Austria, due to the Italian influence. We had one of the best pizzas ever in Corvara, for example.
At the end of this lovely holiday, the best was yet to come as we spent two nights in Venice. We found a luxurious hotel on the Grand Canal at a giveaway price – I was just in the right place at the right time! We adored the waterbuses, which make it easy to see all the hiden parts of the stunning city. You will also walk a long way, so wear your most comfortable shoes. You also need plenty of memory in your camera as you will take hundreds of photos. And the must- see for me is the Rialto market, open from 6am until 1pm. Here you will see some of the freshest fruit and vegetables in the world, and of course there are plenty of bars when you want rest and refreshment.
