World Class Hotels - Europe

A new generation of hotels is opening up around the world. Here are the current top places to stay in Europe:

1. Kempinski Hotel Dukes’ Palace, Bruges

The historic World Heritage city of Bruges is the home of this magnificent new hotel, opened in February 2008. The Kempinski Dukes’ Palace is housed in the restored 15th Century Prinsenhof, built for the marriage between Philip the Good and Isabelle of Portugal. The building has been meticulously decorated, retaining original features including the collection of royal paintings. The 93 bedrooms are individually designed to make best use of this historic building. Tel 0032 50 447882.

2. The Four Seasons Firenze is housed in Florence’s Renaissance Palazzo Della Gherardesca. The earliest parts of this palace and former convent date back to the fifteenth century and the hotel will feature frescoes, sculptures and works of art that have been displayed here for hundreds of years. There are 117 guest rooms and suites, and no two are the same. The decor is a blend of Renaissance artistry with high-tech comfort, and the best rooms overlooking the romantic inner courtyard or the extensive private gardens.

Both hotels include state of the art wireless internet access in all areas, and tranquil health spas.

Dog Friendly Hotels in Norfolk

We have stayed in Norfolk with our dog and at the time we had a very limited choice of dog friendly places to stay. Wells Next the Sea was our destination and we found a bed and breakfast that would not have been our first choice otherwise. Two years later the prospects for dog owners visiting Norfolk are a lot better. The first one is a real find - a true dog friendly hotel in one of the most attractive Norfolk coastal villages.

nullIn Cley, the George Hotel welcomes dogs in several of its guest rooms and in half the restaurant area. This is worth a gold star - there is no ‘hygiene’ reason to stop well-behaved dogs going into a restaurants with their families. Full marks to The George for its common sense attitude. The hotel is in the centre of the small village of Cley on one of the best stretches of the North Norfolk coast. The huge skies, acres of colourful saltmarsh and mile-upon-mile of unspoilt beaches are all on the doorstep here. Read more »

Totnes to explore South Devon

I have written up quite a lot of information about Torquay, which is clearly the largest resort in Torbay, Devon. Torquay has all the amenities of a major town, and a large shopping centre. We stayed in Torquay in an excellent small dog friendly hotel, but the nightlife atmosphere in Torquay is downmarket and tacky. Another time I would recommend staying in one of the smaller resorts: I have posted some information on Babbacombe, another place I recommend as a base is Totnes. Read more »

Touring bases - South Devon

If the hustle and bustle of Torquay is not to your taste, then Babbacombe may appeal to you. This village is only two miles from the middle of Torquay and has two excellent beaches. The main beach is served by the Babbacombe Cliff Railway, making the ascent and descent easier. The smaller beach is dog friendly but the car park is very small: you could use the cliff railway and walk along the path from the main beach to get to the dog friendly area. The village centre is large enough to be interesting without becoming tacky, and there are several upmarket fish and chip shops - all boasting to serve the very best fish, of course. The Babbacombe model village is a big attraction for this area, this is a long established and well maintained miniature replica of buildings, people and vehicles depicting England’s past, present and future.

Babbacombe also has a relaxed dog friendly hotel with free WiFi internet access: the Downs Hotel also has stunning views over Lyme Bay. The hotel website is at www.downshotel.co.uk, or call them on 01803 328543

Review Dog Friendly Country House Hotel in Devon

I reviewed our recent stay in a very good dog friendly hotel in Torquay, Devon, where we spent five days exploring the Torbay area. On leaving Torquay we continued only about sixty miles further down the coast to the Kitley House Hotel, six miles outside Plymouth. This hotel, like the Hillcroft, came up when we searched for ‘dog friendly hotels with WiFi’. The Kitley website features a photo of a dog seated in front of the grand fireplace that dominates the entrance hall. The hotel makes a big point of its dog friendly approach, and four-legged visitors with a goodie bag and personal welcome letter. Read more »

WiFi Hotels in Gloucestershire

budget-travel.brilliant4biz.comHere are some more WiFi hotels where you can take your dog with you. This time I have been checking hotels in Gloucestershire. This is the English county where you have the highest chance of seeing a member of the Royal Family, the county is rural and typifies the image of Britain that most visitors from other countries are seeking. Review - Dog Friendly Hotel Torquay

I listed quite a few dog friendly hotels with WiFi in England recently, this was not simply an act of devotion by me: we wanted to find a place to stay for ourselves. As an independent travel blogger I pay my own way, so I do not get these opportunities to review a hotel as a guest very often. The Hillcroft is a small ‘Boutique Hotel’ with six rooms and suites in Torquay, situated about eight minutes’ walk from the centre of Torquay. This is quite a hilly town and the Hillcroft sits above the town, as the name implies. The walk is not too taxing but I would not advise anyone who is infirm to attempt it. Read more »

Country House Hotels in Yorks and Notts

country house hotelsCountry house hotels should be a place where dogs are welcome but that is not always the case. Here are some good ones, also offering WiFi access.

Langar Hall (pictured) is situated in the Vale of Belvoir between Nottingham and Stamford. This is an area that few overseas tourists find out about. Stamford is one of the best preserved Georgian towns in England and worth exploring further. The hotel will accept small well-behaved dogs and it has Wifi access in all rooms. www.langarhall.com.

dog friendly vacationFurther north, the Angel Inn is a 500-year old hostelry in the village of Hetton, North Yorkshire. Dogs are welcome, as long as they bring their own beds. No WiFi, so you can go out walking on the North Yorks Moors instead. The Angel is strictly speaking a restaurant with rooms, meaning food is the focus. The rooms look good as well, but do not let your dog on to your bed! www.angelhetton.co.uk

I wrote last week about my search for UK holidays with WiFi and I am pleased to find that some enterprising hoteliers and cottage owners have installed WiFi in their accommodation. However I have another essential requirement in a place to stay on holiday - the hotel or cottage must be dog friendly.

http://budget-travel.brilliant4biz.com/wifi-hotels-in-devon Will the UK vacation market measure up? Well, yes, but I cannot review any holiday cottages for you this year because every WiFi cottage that I have found is booked up for August. This isn’t surprising, because most dog owners look for a dog friendly holiday home or cottage instead of a hotel or bed and breakfast. The reason is that dog owners worry that their dog might start barking and annoy the other guests, or that the hotel might simply tolerate dogs instead of welcoming them. So as we are making a late booking in the peak season we have to try for a dog friendly WiFi hotel instead. Read more »
