I have been checking out hotels in Kyoto today, to see what kind of room you can get for less than $200. I was pleasantly surprised - most of the hotels can offer a double or twin room at around $100 - $150 per night as your base for exploring the city. On the whole the buildings are typical international hotels that you would find in most big towns and cities around the world. But this is Japan, and there is a lot of attention to high levels of service and comfort.

In the listings, the majority of hotels in Kyoto include a reassurance of personal attention and a friendly welcome. The rooms look spacious and comfortable in every hotels that I looked at, and all the larger hotels have WiFi Internet access as standard.

My favourite among hotels in Kyoto was the Watazen Ryokan, with a more traditional Japanese look and Japanese style guest rooms. This is centrally located with air conditioning and even a small swimming pool. If you prefer a smaller hotel, check it out.
