Totnes to explore South Devon

I have written up quite a lot of information about Torquay, which is clearly the largest resort in Torbay, Devon. Torquay has all the amenities of a major town, and a large shopping centre. We stayed in Torquay in an excellent small dog friendly hotel, but the nightlife atmosphere in Torquay is downmarket and tacky. Another time I would recommend staying in one of the smaller resorts: I have posted some information on Babbacombe, another place I recommend as a base is Totnes.
Totnes has established a reputation as a funky, arty small town located on the river Dart inland from Torbay within easy reach of Dartmoor. The main street of Totnes is filled with individual, fairly upmarket shops. Just a mile or so outside the town is the Dartington Cider Press Centre, with fifteen shops and craft workshops in a delightful waterside setting.
There is a beautifully situated upmarket Bed and Breakfast a few miles from Totnes at Diptford, called the Old Rectory. Telephone 01548 821 575. If you prefer to stay in the town you can try the Royal Seven Stars Hotel in the centre of Totnes. This is a dog friendly hotel, but it charges an extra £5 per night for the dog to stay. However, the Royal Seven Stars does offer free WiFi Internet access throughout the hotel. Telephone: 01803 862125.
